Cartridge scare at NSC Bose International Airport

Kolkata:Central Industrial Security Force troopers at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport last night found 19 live .32-bore cartridges in a carton under a chair in front of Jet Airways’ check-in counter.
An Indian passenger came to be arrested early today for this. Mr A Ramanathan (38), going from Imphal to Chennai via Kolkata, had 44 cartridges and a pistol in his registered baggage. During a security check, Jet Airways officials objected to this as Mr Ramanathan’s licence permitted him a maximum of 25 cartridges simultaneously.
He was told to part with 19 of these, leaving the cache with a friend or relative or in anyone else’s safe and authorised custody. Mr Ramanathan left the place to return within a short while. In the meantime, the CISF’s surveillance wing chanced upon the carton.
Since Jet Airways’ flight to Chennai was ready for departure, CISF officers contacted the company’s officials who were by then asking the passenger where he had left the ammunition. Though he said initially that these were with one of his friends who would now sell the stuff, interrogation by the CISF revealed that he had actually left the cartridges beneath the chair. That betokened a serious violation of security rules.
The passenger was eventually handed over to the police.
