Tata goes in hard on aviation

TATA Consultancy Services has taken a step towards winning Qantas's juicy $US80 million ($106.5 million) application services account with the launch of a specialist aviation unit in Australia.
The decision to enter aviation in a big way comes as Tata and fellow Indian competitor Satyam line up for two months of sudden-death playoffs over the Qantas deal.
The airline has short-listed the two ahead of a final decision in October. The contract covers the 300-person internal department, which develops software for the airline.
Sources said Tata would devote up to 30 staff to aviation work.
The specialist unit will underline the company's aviation expertise as Qantas enters due diligence with the two bidders.
Satyam is thought to be slightly ahead, having won an Oracle deal with the airline.
