Airport land takeover in the air

Hubli: Fear and uncertainty looms large among residents in the vicinity of Hubli airport, with the state government's proposed move to acquire additional land for the upgradation of the airstrip.
Following approval from the Union civil aviation ministry, the Karnataka government decided to acquire 446 acres of land in addition to the 356 acres of existing land, to facilitate the expansion of Hubli airport.
A decision to this effect was taken following a joint survey conducted by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the state revenue department recently.
The government, after careful consideration of the AAI proposal, decided to hand over the land free of cost to the Airports Authority of India for restructuring and modernisation of Hubli airport.
The acquisition move has not only derailed the selling prospects of some landowners who are mid-way between land deals with private buyers, but has also brought to a halt all development activities.
