Jet plane develops snag after bird hit

Mumbai: A technical snag developed in the landing gear of a Jet Airways flight on Monday leading to the commander of the aircraft asking passengers to remove their shoes and brace themselves for an emergency landing.
The captain made the announcement minutes before the 150-seater Boeing 737-400, on its way from Thiruvananthapuram to Mumbai, made its final approach to land at Mumbai airport around 4.30 pm. Ambulances and fire engines were lined up on the runway for an emergency.
A Jet Airways spokesperson confirmed that a technical snag had developed on the flight with 68 passengers on board. "Due to a bird hit, the sensor which indicates that the landing gear is down, locked and ready for landing, was damaged. So there was no indication in the cockpit about the position of the landing gear," said the spokesperson adding that it was not known when the bird strike occurred.
