Karwar airfield will have limited operations

Panaji: Flag Officer Goa Area of Navy Sanjay Vadgaonkar on Friday said that the Naval base at Karwar was capable of berthing ships and submarines, but could not accommodate large-bodied aircraft and their operations.
The controversial demand for shifting of the Naval base from Goa to Karwar had been taken up repeatedly by a section of people, including some MPs and MLAs, of Goa State.
In a press release issued here on Saturday, Rear Admiral Vadgaonkar said there was no airfield at the Karwar Naval base. A provision does exist in the blueprint of the second phase of `Project Seabird' to have a small airfield at Karwar.
However, its use would be limited to operations of helicopters and small aircraft, primarily to maintain supply lines to ships and submarines, he said.
The topography and geographical location of Karwar did not permit operations of the large-bodied aircraft, he added.
