Four Air India passengers detained for false hijack drama at Thiruvananthapuram airport

Four passengers of Abu Dhabi-Kochi flight (IX 4422) of Air India Express were on Friday detained at Thiruvananthapuram airport for allegedly trying to barge into the cockpit of the aircraft while protesting the delay in reaching their destination.
The Chennai regional office of Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an inquiry into the incident.
There was a high drama at Thiruvananthapuram airport when one of the pilots of the flight, Capt Rupali Waghmare, pressed the hijack button in panic after some irate passengers allegedly stormed the cockpit.
According to airport sources, the passengers on board the flight created ruckus as they got agitated after waiting for nearly four hours for an alternative arrangement by the airline to take them to Kochi as the flight had to be diverted to Thiruvananthapuram due to poor visibility at the original destination.
After the problem came to the notice of airport authorities, it was initially reported that the matter had been resolved amicably and the flight was finally cleared for departure.
However, it later emerged that four to six passengers were detained on their arrival in Kochi and taken to Nedumassery police station for interrogation for allegedly misbehaving with the pilots.
