Chennai airport officials reach out to local schools

Chennai: As many as 178 elementary school students will now have access to computers with Internet facilities and can study in a hygienic atmosphere thanks to corporate social responsibility schemes being initiated by Chennai airport authorities.
The 83-year-old St Thomas Mount Panchayat Union Elementary School in Gowl Bazaar did not have basic amenities and toilets for decades and the student population had been dwindling over the years. But with new class rooms and a computer lab coming up, the school has got a new lease of life, said the beaming headmistress of the school.
When all the other areas witnessed growth due to the real estate boom, Gowl Bazaar and Trisulam panchayat areas had seen no such development as both villages are located close to the airport. “Construction of multi-storeyed buildings are banned due to aviation norms and farming activities that invite birds and insects are also banned as part of airport security measure and we have little option for development,” said panchayat union chairman M.C. Krishnan.
