Chennai: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is planning to ask IIT-Roorkee to study the bridge built across Adyar river for the secondary runway at Chennai airport.
The move comes after the Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) demanded an investigation by an independent agency after safety experts questioned the structural stability of the bridge built to extend the runway from around 5,000 feet to 11,600 feet. "I have discussed the issue with DGCA. We have given all relevant papers, including reports by IIT-Madras and other agencies, which checked the design to the regulator. If they are not satisfied with that, we will ask IIT-Roorkee to conduct an investigation as they are the best in structural and civil engineering," said AAI chairman V P Agrawal. He also said AAI board's member for planning was in touch with the DGCA. The secondary runway was extended across the river at a cost of 550 crore.
