Close shave for SpiceJet flight

Tuticorin: The passengers on board a SpiceJet flight from Chennai had a lucky escape after a possible flight accident was averted at Tuticorin airport on Sunday.
The rear landing gear failed to open when the flight landed at the airport. The aircraft came to a halt with a huge noise but with minimal damage.
"It was fortunate that there was no damage to the aircraft. All the passengers were immediately evacuated from the aircraft and taken to safety,'' said a police official citing airport authorities. Airport sources said that the flight landed faster than the normal speed and suffered minor damage in the tail portion.
According to the airport authorities, the Spicejet flight landed at the airport around 8.40am. With the landing gear failing, the aircraft's tail hit the tarmac. The stricken aircraft dragged along the runway for some distance before coming to a halt. The jet had to be towed to the hanger.
