Transport services take a hit as Seemandhra simmers

Visakhapatnam: An oil tanker transporting aviation turbine fuel (ATF) from Kochi Refineries Limited (KRL) of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited ( BPCL) in Kerala, which usually takes three days to cover the 1,437km distance to Vizag via Nellore, finally drove into Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) premises in the port city on Saturday after a week's delay as it was forced to crawl along the arterial NH-16 (formerly NH-5).
A series of bandhs, strikes, rallies and road blockades has been rocking half a dozen national highways passing through the 13 Seemandhra districts ever since the announcement of the Congress Working Committee's (CWC) decision in favour of Telangana last Tuesday; crippling transportation of various goods.
"It was smooth-sailing till Nellore, where the trouble started on Wednesday due to protests on the highways. We were forced to halt several times on NH-16, between Nellore and Visakhapatnam. We were also scared of the protests as the truck was carrying highly inflammable fuel," one of the truck crew said.
