AI faces tough on-time target

New Delhi: Air India needs to step up its efforts to meet the on-time-performance target of 90 per cent set by the government.

Last month, one in every four flights of the airline was late in reaching its destination, the aviation regulator has said in a report.

According to data revealed by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, Air India's average "on-time performance" in four metro cities - Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and Hyderabad - was 76.8 per cent for the six months ended October.

Vistara - the joint venture between the Tatas and Singapore Airlines - had the highest on-time-performance of 93.7 per cent on the same routes in October against Air India's 75.5 per cent.

Concerned over the dismal performance, the Centre had asked Air India to achieve higher operational efficiency and set a target of 90 per cent on-time performance for this month. "While the national carrier is taking steps to improve its performance, the ministry feels it needs to boost it further to make a faster turnaround given that new airlines have entered the market," an aviation ministry official said.
