Air India plans to cut fuel expenses by involving passengers

With plans to cut down on its fuel expenses and also to reduce carbon emissions, national carrier Air India (AI) may now involve passenger participation to allow itself to club different flights in close intervals. The passengers may be given certain incentives if they choose to opt for it.

"We may do it in future, as passengers' participation is a must in an environment conservation programme to save the planet," said Harpreet Singh, executive director, flight safety, Air India. "For example, if the passengers' meeting has been scheduled a bit late and if he/she agrees to fly in a later flight, then the plan is possible," she added.
At present, most of the airlines do it but without informing the passengers or completely misleading them by citing some technical issue or the other. Airlines never actually specify what that "technical issue" is all about. This is generally done if two flights are about half an hour or an hour apart from each other and there are not enough passengers in both the flights.
