Airline checks in woman as man

Mumbai: A Jet Airways passenger found that she was male, on her boarding pass that is, minutes after she boarded a flight. Ritika Maheshwari would have flown as Rishit Shah, as no one noticed the error on the pass, till just before the scheduled time of departure of the flight from Ahmedabad to Mumbai on Monday morning.

The passenger went undetected at the security counter and boarding gate. It all began with a web check-in. "I could not take a printout of the pass, so I collected it from the airline check-in counter at the airport," said Maheshwari, a chartered accountant. "I did not check the pass as I knew my seat number," she said. Neither did security personnel who cleared her bother to check the name or wonder why she had a name generally given to a male.

She cleared security under the name of Rishit Shah, got the pass verified by airline personnel at the boarding gate, and went to her seat. "After I was seated, an airline staffer came, calling out my name," she said. That was when all involved realised the error. "They cut off the wrong name and scribbled mine on the pass," she added.
