Gannavaram may get cargo terminal

Vijayawada: A cargo terminal is likely to come up at Gannavaram. The visit of AAI joint general manager B Selvakumar has raised the hopes over elevation of the airport's status. He interacted with representatives from AP Chamber of Commerce and Industry (APCCI), private airlines and other stakeholders here recently.

The discussions focused on the scope for building a cargo terminal at Gannavaram. Exploring the project's viability, Selvakumar sought feedback from officials of Air India, Spice Jet, True Jet and Air Costa too. According to information, AAI is looking to build 25 cargo terminals across the country in this fiscal. In fact, eight of them have been completed so far.

Industrialists from the region have appealed repeatedly for a cargo terminal at Gannavaram, citing the business potential. Apart from eggs, dairy products, fruits such as mango, papaya etc; markets at Kolkata, Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai also source the vegetables produced in Guntur, Krishna and West Godavari districts. In the absence of cargo handling facility at Gannavaram, traders are constrained to transport even perishable commodities to Hyderabad by road. From there, the same is sent by flights to different destinations.
