Government wants Air India to boost passenger, cargo revenues

New Delhi: The civil aviation ministry wants Air India to focus on improving passenger and cargo revenue, even as the national carrier posted a marginal increase in yields and reduced losses by half during the fiscal first half.

The airline's losses reduced to Rs 1,245 crore from Rs 2,490 crore a year earlier. It registered a 0.01% increase in passenger revenue and 5% improvement in cargo revenue during the April-September period. Load factor, or capacity utilisation, improved to 72.2% from 71.6% a year earlier.

"While our international yields have seen improvements, domestic yields are strained due to lower fares offered by (rival) airlines dragging our yields," a government official present at a meeting held to review its performance said.
Officials said achievements like the improvement of on-time performance to 82% from 79% last year, higher load factor, improvement in fleet utilisation and availability of aircraft were also discussed in the meeting.
