A long wait - AAI upgrades tech to make flying easier, but airlines fail to catch up

Over the past few years, Airports Authority of India has been on a path to modernise its technology. But airlines have been posing a stumbling block to AAI's endeavour to install a state-of-the-art system. From installing technology to track flights and eliminate traffic decongestion near airports, the communication and navigation wing of AAI has modernised air traffic control systems and networked radar across the country. It has also introduced satellite-based tracking of cruising flights over the ocean, started trials on a satellite-based system to guide aircraft for landing and take-off in a bid to replace conventional instrument system. Apart from these, AAI is working on its prestigious project `Gagan' that aims to make air traffic control fully satellite based.Because of the unenthusiastic cooperation from airlines, passengers have been bearing the brunt. They get held up at airports, reach their destinations late, and miss connecting flights when air congestion throws flight schedules out of gear. Though Chennai has installed ADS-B (automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast) system that allows satellite surveillance of planes that fly over the Bay of Bengal, many air Indian lines do not have quality receivers on their aircraft. This has affected implementation of the system. ADS-B also serves as a backup for radars.
