Hope for zero flight diversion in fog brightens

Pune: The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) and India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials have expressed confidence that it might soon be possible to ensure "zero flight diversions" during extreme fog events.
Data compiled under the recent 'fog campaign' by IITM-IMD showed that the number of flight diversions from Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) have reduced drastically over the last four years, from 89 diversions in 2012-13 and 143 in 2013-14 to 20 flight diversions in 2015-16.
When visibility at an airport drops to below 50 meters during a fog event, it is referred to as CAT III C conditions, when no aircraft is allowed to land and is, hence, diverted.
