Paragliding schools under scanner after sighting of mystery objects

Mumbai: Even as the mystery behind three instances of parachute-like objects spotted by airline and helicopter pilots in the last month remains unsolved by the police, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has asked the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) to revisit the rules followed by adventure sports companies in and around Mumbai and reframe them if necessary.
Although all registered paragliding schools were shut between January 23 and 30 due to heightened security in the wake of Republic Day, the DGCA has recommended that the BCAS run a check on them, because of the frequency of such objects being spotted.
ATS chief Vivek Phansalkar said it was not clear if the objects were really paragliders. "The nearest paragliding point is Kamshet. We have verified that no paraglider from there had entered the Juhu airspace. We have also checked several nearby points after consulting with various agencies but haven't found anything," said Phansalkar.
