Police scour Nedumbassery airport for forex touts

Kochi: Cochin International Airport Limited (CIAL) is once again becoming a hub of touts engaged in currency trading.

The Nedumbassery police arrested two persons, identified as Stanley, 52 and Sebastian, 48, from the parking area outside the international terminal of CIAL on Friday night. Several foreign currencies valued at Rs.1.30 lakh were seized from them.

“The arrests followed a tip-off that the racketeers were offering passengers attractive rates and that they pestered foreign passengers. Their operations are based on the departure and arrival segments of international flights,” said R. Rustum, Deputy Police Superintendent. The accused have been booked under Section 13 of the Foreign Exchange Management Act and IPC 420.

The police have intensified the search for four more persons, who fled the spot on seeing the personnel. Official sources said the touts had links with a couple of taxi drivers operating at CIAL.
