'Smart' Surat's not so smart air connectivity defies logic

Surat: Though Surat has made it to the list of 20 smart cities announced by the central government, it's lagging behind when it comes to number of aircrafts landings and take-offs from the airports in other cities. While other cities selected under the smart cities project are enjoying good air connectivity, Surat has just five take-offs and landings per day.
Even smaller cities like Coimbatore having population of just 10.61 lakh, Bhubaneshwar with 8.38 lakh have more than 40 landings and take-offs per days. Cities like Jaipur, Indore, Pune, Bhopal have around 25 to 111 flight landing and take-offs per day. Spread in over 326 square kilometers of area, Surat is the eighth largest city in India with population of approximately 50 lakh.
It has the highest per capita income of Rs 4.5 lakh per household. The GDP was $40 billion in 2010-11 and it is expected to cross $57 billion by 2020.
