Air passengers decry AAI decision

Kozhikode: Representatives of political parties and labour unions, businessmen and non-resident Indians, under the auspices of the Malabar Chamber of Commerce (MCC) and Calicut Airport Committee (CAC), on Tuesday staged a demonstration in front of the Air India office in protest against the decision of the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) to discontinue the service of wide-bodied aircraft at the Calicut airport.

Deploring the decision of the DGCA, MCC president C. Mohan and CAC chairman P.V. Gangadharan said aircraft such as B77-200/300 and A330-200 had been allowed to smoothly operate services at the Calicut airport till May 2015. Now the decision had come after the runway of the airport had been strengthened and equipment such as Instrument Landing System had also been installed.

Wide-bodied aircraft had been allowed to operate before the commencement of the work and the partial shutdown of the airport. The decision is likely to affect hundreds of Haj pilgrims. At the same time, experts of airline companies had given their opinion that they were willing to conduct the services.
