Pune international airport: Speed up obstruction survey, state to AAI

Pune: The state civil aviation department has asked for the obstruction survey of the site of the proposed Pune international airport at the earliest to go ahead with the project. The site at Rajgurunagar in Khed taluka in Pune district was taken up for survey and assessment by the Airport Authority of India (AAI). After a meeting held on Tuesday, senior officials said that the state government is keen to go ahead with the very site and they have asked to speed up the report. “The site is feasible but we have to get the clearance report from AAI. In a meeting with MIHAAN officials in the presence of AAI members, we have asked them to speed up the report for the Pune airport site as well,” said a senior state government official.
Interestingly, the Centre is also keen that Pune, which has logged in 100 per cent passenger growth, should have a separate airport to cater to the growing population. The present airport, which is a defence airport, is not enough for the growing passenger traffic and they have asked the state government to expedite the matter as early as possible.
State government officials stated that they are well aware of the required growth and are in the final stages of site approval. “Once there is a go-ahead from the AAI, state government and local party leaders on the site, the process can be speeded up,’’ the government official added.
