Centre affirms financial aid for Karaikal airport: CM

Chennai: The  centre has promised financial support to set up a new airport at Karaikal, once the Puducherry territorial government finds the necessary land, said Chief Minister V Narayanasamy.

Narayanasamy was speaking to Express, after returning home from his first visit to Delhi after taking charge as the Chief Minister. Following the UT’s plea, the Civil Aviation Ministry has assured support, he said.

Accompanied by senior members of his Cabinet, Narayanasamy called on PM Narendra Modi, Union Ministers Arun Jaitley and Ashok Gajapathi Raju to submit a memorandum seeking a financial package for the UT This included waiver of Rs 2,117 crore legacy loan (along with interest of Rs 1,300 crore) which the Home Ministry has been rejecting for a long time and Rs 118-crore flood relief fund assured by the Central committee after spot inspection.

Addressing newspersons in Chennai, Narayanasamy said that he had also sought speedy clearances for the Rs 2,100-crore water supply and sanitation projects funded by the French government, one-time grant of Rs 500 crore for building a new Legislative Assembly and Convention Centre and for renovating the Puducherry airport.
