DGCA sacks Air Pegasus safety chief after violations

New Delhi: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation ( DGCA ) has sacked the safety chief and suspended five pilots of Bengaluru-based regional carrier Air Pegasus after the regulator found innumerable safety violations by it.

The aviation regulator has also written to the airline chief to ensure that safety rules violations do not happen in the future. The chief of safety is a pilot of the airline chosen by the DGCA to report any safety violations to the regulator and is a representative of the regulator on the airlines staff.

"We have found severe safety violations in the airline. A large number of flights were found to be not following safety rules while landing. In one of the instances, the aircraft computer asked the pilot to go around but the pilot landed the aircraft," said a senior DGCA official, who did not want to be identified.

The official added that the flight could land safely only because the airport was Trivandrum, which has a long runway of 11,000 feet and the plane could land. "The duration of pilots' suspension range between 7 and 90 days. Out of the five, one is an expat pilot and the rest are Indians," said the official.
