Lack of air service hits IT growth

Nashik: The constant hurdles in the take-off of air services from Nashik have affected the launch of IT sector for the past 15 years. All that the city can boast about is the setting up of the Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) innovation centre in January 2015.
Once touted as the next destination for the IT hub considering its proximity to Mumbai and Pune, Nashik has failed to attract IT majors despite repeated attempts. Industrial associations said the IT growth of Nashik will take off once air connectivity is established with major cities like Bangalore, Hyderabad and Delhi at least through hopping flights via Mumbai.
Sudhir Mutalik, chairman, Confederation of Indian Industry, North Maharashtra Zonal Council, said, "The IT growth of Nashik will not take off unless we have air service here. Why will foreigners come here if they have to drive for five hours from Pune to Nashik and three hours from Mumbai to Nashik. They will reach Singapore in the time required for road travel between Pune to Nashik."
"There is no problem of human resource as youths from Nashik are working in many large IT companies. Moreover, there is also no issue of scarcity of land as it can be made available from Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). New industrial estate is also coming up at Talegaon-Akrale near Nashik. Hence, government should take efforts to commence air service from Nashik here," said Mutalik.
