A taxiway on KIA could foil plans to implement alternative route to airport

Bengaluru: Traffic gridlocks on Ballari Road - the only approach to the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) from the city - having turned into a recurrent nightmare, Bengaluru traffic police have identified an alternative route to the airport to reduce the burden on the arterial road. However, the proposal's fate hinges on the readiness of the aerodrome authorities to accordingly modify KIA's expansion plans to accommodate a taxiway bridge.
Aimed at providing an alternative route for people in east and southeast Bengaluru such as Koramangala, Sarjapura Road, Electronics City, Whitefield, Mahadevapura, KR Puram among other localities, the road will lead to the rear side of the airport.
With the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the consortium that runs KIA, planning to open a cargo terminal towards the airport's southeast side near Bettakote Lake, traffic police has reason to hope that the alternative route will solve the city's congestion woes. In order to facilitate truck movement to the cargo terminal, BIAL has planned a new entrance near the lake. Police are asking the consortium to also allow other airport users to utilise this entrance.
