AAI, Pawan Hans, ONGC chiefs to look into Juhu airport’s problems

A committee consisting of the chairmen of the Airports Authority of India,Pawan Hans and ONGC will be formed to look into Juhu airport’s infrastructure problems. The decision was taken at a parliamentary committee meeting here on Tuesday during which AAI, which owns and operates the airport, once again came under attack from oil rig operators and helicopter companies for the poor state of its runways and lack of basic infrastructure.

“It was not the first time that these issues have been raised. But there has been no improvement in the state of Juhu airport,” a stakeholder said. The stakeholders alleged that AAI officials, in collusion with private builders, had kept the secondary runway non-operational. TOI had reported how AAI officials had flouted safety norms and issued no-objection certificates to builders to increase the height of buildings in the approach path of the secondary runway beyond the permissible limit. “The stakeholders questioned why the secondary runway has been deemed non-operational for over four years now,” an official said, adding that pressure from the builders’ lobby was cited as a reason.
