Police register case against Air India pilot for flying drunk

Kozhikode: The police on Friday registered a case against an Air India pilot who was found drunk in the post- flight examination on arrival of the flight from Sharjah at the Karipur airport on August 10.
Karipur police identified the accused as co- pilot Rithesh Mathankar, 39 hailing from Maharashtra. He has been charged under sections 11 (Penalty for flying so as to cause danger) and 11 A ( failure to comply with directions) of Aircraft Act 1934.
Karipur sub inspector of police, Sadanandan P said that the case was registered on the basis of a complaint by Air India authorities.
The DGCA had suspended the pilot for four years and had asked the airline to register an FIR against the pilot. Air India had also launched an enquiry into the incident.
The AI flight from Sharjah had to operate in another sector from Karipur airport and with the pilot failing in the post- flight alcohol test, the airline had to divert another flight to Karipur with an additional pilot so that the aircraft could fly again.
