State assures to clear AAI’s salary dues for city airport

Nagpur: A week before bids are to be invited for privatization of Nagpur airport, state government has cleared the issue of pending payments with Airports Authority of India (AAI). It has assured AAI that staffers' salary dues amounting to Rs62 crore will be cleared by December end. The first instalment of Rs25 crore will be paid within 15 days followed by the balance amount in December. A meeting between Maharasthra Airport Development Company (MADC) and AAI was held at chief minister Devendra Fadnavis's residence in Mumbai. Fadnavis as chief minister is also chairman of MADC.
The development was confirmed by vice-chairman-cum-managing director of MADC Vishwas Patil. The assurance removes a major roadblock towards airport privatization. AAI had earlier warned of taking back the airport's possession if the dues were not settled by August end. The bids are to be invited on August 29.
The salary dues pertain to the period after the airport was taken over by Mihan India Ltd (MIL) in August 2009. MIL is a joint venture between AAI and MADC. It was formed as a special purpose vehicle to develop the city airport into a multimodal international cargo hub for which now a private investor is being scouted for.
