Gold worth Rs 35lakh seized at airport: DRI

Chennai: Sleuths from Directorate of Revenue Intelligence busted an attempt to smuggle in 1kg gold worth approximately 35lakh at Chennai airport on Sunday. A passenger and two ground handling staff belonging to a private contractor were arrested in this connection.
Sources said that the passenger who arrived from Abu Dhabi managed to hand over a bag that contained the gold to the ground staff.
The staff was supposed to take the bag out of the terminal bypassing customs checks. However, the attempt was busted after DRI received a tip off that the contraband would be smuggled with the help of airport staff and thus were monitoring the staff.
"There was information that a few staff have started to join hands with smugglers to take gold out of the airport. The sleuths kept watch on the staff and apprehended them when they were found with the bags ," said an airport official.
The passenger was found to be a carrier who was transporting the gold to the smugglers. Inquiry is on to trace them and also to find out whether they had smuggled gold out of the airport using the same modus operandi.
