A new airport on the Anvil Ground Report - Terminal building to reflect Pune's rich heritage

A statue or a huge portrait of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje, glimpses of Bajirao's bravado and slices of rich cultural heritage of the city could welcome fliers to the proposed international airport in Purandar. Maharashtra Airport Development Company Limited (MADC) officials stressed the terminal building of the new facility would give a befitting tribute to the city's heroes and mirror different aspects of Pune's cultural legacy. A final plan is yet to be pre pared, but the officials emphasized the new airport would depict the city's picture -both traditional and modern -like many airport terminals across the country.
"The new airport building will surely reflect many aspects of the city's culture in both tra ditional and modern forms. The exact details are yet to be finalized, though," a MADC official told TOI.
Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had formally announced on October 7 that the new Pune international airport would come at Purandar taluka. He had also said it would be named after Chhatrapati Sambhaji Raje. "The chief minister rightly announced the name of the airport during its official announcement because politics over names is common here. With the city having a rich cultural heritage, authorities should come up with probable designs for the terminal building. These aspects seem small but they should be kept in mind. They should be given a rough outline right from the beginning," aviation expert Dhairyashil Vandekar told TOI.
