DGCA grants safety clearance for new apron at Karipur airport

Kozhikode: The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has granted safety clearance and accorded sanction for commissioning of the new apron built at the Karipur Airport.
Airport authorities said that the apron will add two more aircraft parking slots at the airport, taking the total number of parking spaces to 11. The apron will be part of the Rs 85 crore international terminal, which is coming up at the airport.
The new apron, the work of which was completed three years ago, would help augment the existing operational infrastructure and provide respite to the shortage of aircraft parking slots at the airport.
"The DGCA has completed the safety assessment of the apron and has granted permission to commission it. Several airlines have announced starting of new schedules from December to compensate for the current ban on operation of wide- bodied aircrafts at the airport. The new apron which will be opened soon would help us manage the flights better even though we would still need more apron space,"airport director K Janardhanan said.
He said that two aerobridges would also be built to connect the apron to the proposed international arrival terminal which is under construction.
