MDC demands new airport at Thiruvambadi

Kozhikode: With the Airport Authority of India (AAI) reiterating that operation of Code- E aircraft is not possible due to present infrastructure constraints from the Karipur Airport, trade organisations and a section of the people representatives are mooting for a greenfield airport project at Thiruvambadi. The Malabar Development Council (MDC) has submitted a preliminary request for the new airport to the state government.
"AAI has suggested in response to our letter that the state government may apply for setting up a new airport and we have presented the preliminary request for an airport at Thiruvambadi to AAI and the state government," C E Chakkunny, president of MDC said.
Acquisition of 485 acres of land for expansion of the runway at Karipur airport is unlikely due to the stiff opposition from the local residents," he added.
He also said that around 1854 acres of land belonging to the Thiruvambadi Estate was available for setting up the new airport. He added that the land can be acquired without displacing a single family.
"Also we have received interest from three companies who are ready to participate in the project either on a build operate transfer (BOT) basis or on the model of CIAL," he said.
