Memo to route Pondy-Bengaluru flight via Trichy

In order to boost the city's regional connectivity, Trichy international airport authorities have met Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry Kiran Bedi and discussed ways to route the proposed Puducherry- Bengaluru Air India flight via Trichy to make it viable.
Since the number of domestic passengers at Trichy airport had doubled in the last few years, fliers from the district have been appealing to the carriers to operate services to Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru. According to available data, domestic passenger traffic at Trichy was 86,356 in 2010-11, 96,944 during 2014-15 and touched 1.50 lakh now. The airport has recorded a 55% surge in domestic passengers despite handling only two carriers and that too flying only to Chennai.
Though Jet Airways, the only domestic flight that has operated on Trichy-Chennai sector, increased its daily frequency to three from two, others have been reluctant. Air India Express touches Chennai en route to Singapore from Trichy. The long-pending demand for a flight to Bengaluru has been remaining unaddressed. Kingfisher Airlines and Spice jet had operated to Bengaluru and Chennai from here sometime ago.
