Rickshaw drivers at airport show the way

When Tarun's flight landed at Lohegaon airport, he was sick worried about reaching home in Pimple Gurav since he had just Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes in his wallet.
Initially hesitant, he approached an autorickshaw driver and told him about his predicament. However to his utter surprise, the autorickshaw driver not only agreed to drop him to his destination but also accepted the now demonetized currency notes while assuring him of change after the rise. Only thing he demanded of him was to get a travel slip from the rickshaw counter.
There are many autorickshaw and taxi drivers operating from the airport who are helping people reach their destinations against the backdrop of the scrapping of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.
"We do understand the problems faced by people after the demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes. Though many public transport operators and food joints have decided against accepting the demonetized currency, we decided to think differently. As a goodwill gesture, if a passenger does not possess currency notes other than those scrapped by the government, we will help them by accepting the demonetized notes," Ashok Kedari, a rickshaw driver at the airport, told TOI.
At present, there are around 250 autorickshaws and 150 taxi drivers at the airport. Arvind Phule, another such autorickshaw driver, said all of them have entered into a mutual understanding regarding the change money. "It might be possible at times that we do not have the change. In such a case, we coordinate among ourselves or the taxi drivers and get the required change to return to the passenger," he said, adding that they also help passengers get a cab from the pre-paid booth.
