Centre okays Kadapa airport expansion plan

The central government has agreed to expand the Kadapa airport in a bid to encourage air passenger traffic in the backward Rayalaseema region. There are three airports in Rayalaseema but only the airport in Tirupati is currently operational. The airport at Puttaparthi is owned by Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust.
The Kadapa airport is temporarily out of operation. Only one private airliner is operating out of it officially, but the flight status on the website of the airliner shows as `cancelled'. TDP MP CM Ramesh on Wednesday thanked Union civil aviation minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju for clearing the expansion proposal.
According to sources, the Centre has given its nod for expansion of the runway from the present two kilometres to 3.2 km to enable big planes to land at the airport.About Rs 80 crore will be spent on the airport expansion, sources said.
