Flyer arrested with Rs1.3 crore gold, thanks to cellphone glitch

A 26-year-old Indian who flew in from Dubai was arrested at Mumbai airport on Wednesday night by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) officials after he tried to smuggle in 4.9 kg of gold, valued at Rs 1.3 crore. The arrest, which exposed a Bengaluru gold smuggling syndicate, was made possible because of a malfunctioning mobile phone, a photograph that could not be sent on WhatsApp and timely tip-off to DRI.

Kabadsha Fawaz, who was remanded to judicial custody till January 19 by a local court, was intercepted by DRI officials outside the Customs arrival hall. "He had a black backpack and, to camouflage the consignment, the 42 bars were wrapped in two black boxes, both secured with black insulation tape,'' said a DRI official.
The passenger had flown in business class of Jet Airways. Fawaz told DRI the two packs were given to him by an individual at Dubai airport. "The supplier had instructed him to click his photograph in front of any baggage conveyor belt at Mumbai airport. He was then told to WhatsApp the picture to him and wait for a person, who was to meet him in the arrival hall. The consignment was then to exchange hands in a washroom at the airport," said the official.
