200-ft-high flag post sans aviation obstacle lights

Aurangabad: In a major violation of air traffic safety rules, the authorities concerned have not yet put aviation obstacle lights on a 200-foot-high flag post at the historic Kala Chabutra near Kranti chowk.
The district administration, in association with the Chamber of Marathwada Industries and Agriculture (CMIA), Swami Ramanand Tirth Sanshodhan Sansthan, an NGO, and other leading bodies of traders and industrialists, is developing the spot at a cost of about Rs 3 crore .
The yet-to-be illuminated flag post — tallest man-made structure in the city — was built about three to four months ago and poses a serious threat to aircraft and helicopters that regularly fly over the city.
Gupreet Singh Bagga, CMIA president, said all the required permissions for the flag post have been availed and that the lamps will be illuminated soon after getting a power connection. "It will be a 24x7 illuminated structure, but right now we do not have power backup at the spot," he told TOI on Tuesday.
