Chennai: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) seized foreign currency worth Rs 60 lakh from two passengers at Chennai Airport.
Two passengers Mohamed Riaz Deen and Abdul Basith were intercepted by the DRI agents at Chennai International Airport during the early hours of February 22.
The passengers were bound to board Thai Ariways flight TG 338. The DRI officials surrounded the passengers as they crossed the customs clearance desk and subjected their luggage to search once again, only to find undisclosed foreign currencies concealed within.
The passengers had discreetly placed the money with mobile phone boxes, power banks and shoes. A special cavity was also created in the hand bag to hide the money.
The two were carrying various denominations of US dollars, Euro and Pound equating to Rs 59,66,588.
The DRI seized the money under Customs Act, 1962 suspecting that the intent of the passengers was to smuggle the money out of the country.
