MoD approves 18 acres of land for Pune airport's expansion

Pune: In another move as part of the expansion of Pune airport at Lohegaon, the defence ministry approved 18 acres of land, as announced by defence minister Manohar Parrikar at a meeting in Delhi on Wednesday.

Earlier, the MoD had approved 15.84 acres of land for expansion and this was handed over to airport authorities on May 15, 2016. According to sources at the Airports Authority of India (AAI), “It is the part of another 30-acre plot, which will constitute phase II. The meeting was held with AAI officials and the Indian Air Force (IAF) on February 13.”

When contacted Ajay Kumar, director of Pune airport, said, “The 18 acres of land were allocated considering the traffic at the airport. The AAI has already approved Rs 408 crore for a new terminal building equipped with high-tech infrastructure, to be built in a 35,000 sq m space.”
