Project to save airport from bird hit to take off soon

Thiruvananthapuram: If everything goes as planned, Trivandrum International Airport will soon be able to resolve the bird-hit menace. Found as a major reason for bird hits, AAI in association with City Corporation has decided to curb the waste menace in the vicinity of airport.
A proposal, which was submitted by the city corporation to Airport Authority of India (AAI) for installing aerobic bins at Sulaiman Street and Vallakadavu, was send for approval at AAI headquarter in New Delhi. Now, as the fund has been sanctioned, AAI will convene a meeting with the corporation officials to proceed with the project.
AAI will take up the project worth Rs 53 lakh as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR) activity.
In a cleaning drive conducted by city corporation as part of Haritha Kerala mission in areas around airport, large quantity of waste was cleared from Sulaiman Street and Vallakadavu, following which the corporation decided to install aerobic bins in these areas. Around eight aerobic bin units will be constructed as part of the project.
The project also includes the construction of footpath with interlock tiles from fire and rescue station, Chackai, to All Saints' College, along the boundary wall of the airport.
According to airport director George G Tharakan, the work can be completed by May as the fund has been sanctioned.
"Bird hit has become a major issue, which could even lead to emergency landing of a flight. It requires a permanent solution to curb waste dumping in open areas near the airport. A meeting will be convened with the corporation officials next week to proceed with the project. Though it is a CSR project, we plan to construct the footpath, which the corporation can later maintain," said Tharakan.
