Helicopter service to far flung areas, including Gurez, delayed

Srinagar: The JK Government is already facing sharp criticism for inordinate delay in finalizing bidding process for selecting the operator.
The roll out of much-hyped subsidized helicopter service to far flung areas of J&K including Gurez, Keran and Machil has faced further delay due to “failure” of Pawan Hans Limited - the Central Public Sector Enterprise providing helicopter services- in arranging pilots and “adequate number” of helicopters.
Sources in State Government told Greater Kashmir that there is delay on part of the Pawan Hans Limited to start the service to far-flung areas of the State. “We had communicated them to start the service in first week of March but they have not been able to do it so far,” Commissioner Civil Aviation, S. Katoch told Greater Kashmir. “They are facing problems of pilots. They have verbally told us that their pilots have proceeded on training.”

A senior bureaucrat, wishing anonymity, said the premier helicopter carrier is facing shortage of pilots and helicopters. “They have made only one helicopter available but we have asked them to arrange another helicopter,” he said. The Pawan Hans, however, attributed the delay to logistic issue.
