Venkaiah Naidu and his ‘flying troubles’

It happened yet again for the Union Minister, Venkaiah Naidu. On Wednesday, a chartered aircraft carrying Mr. Naidu along with BJP chief Amit Shah which left New Delhi for Imphal in Manipur developed an engine problem mid-air and returned to Delhi.

For the senior BJP leader, flight delays, sudden cancellations of flights, chartered planes developing snags in mid-air and even miraculously landing safe on the ground, appears to have become an oft repeated experience. And such is the regularity of Mr. Naidu’s flying plans going wrong that in jest, he is often referred to as a veteran of emergency plane landing in India!

Last June, the Union Minister was left fuming at Air India after he had to cancel an official engagement in Hyderabad following a flight delay. Reason, the pilot arrived late.

Going further back, in April 2014, a private flight meant to fly Mr. Naidu from Ujjain to Indore developed a technical snag and his departure was delayed.

In February, 2013, a Tiruchirapalli-bound Spicejet aircraft with 47 passengers on board, including the senior BJP leader had to return back to Chennai immediately after take-off following technical glitch. The plane took-off at around 10.30 p.m. from Chennai and came back to land there within 30 minutes!
