Surat airport ready for full-fledged flight ops

Come June, Surtis could hope for better air connectivity from the airport.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has given the approval for the use of the newly constructed 655 m of runway and the isolation bay at the airport. With this, the runway size at Surat has been increased from 2,250 m to 2,905 m. Also, the second phase of the re-carpeting of 185 m existing runway will begin from April 24, which is expected to be completed by the mid of June-2017.
Official sources said that the first phase of the runway re-carpeting and extension work, which includes re-carpeting of 2,065 m and expansion of 655 meters, has been completed. However, 2,720 m runway will be operational for the landing and take offs of the aircrafts. By June, the airport will have a total of 2,905 m, of runway ready for use.
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) is spending Rs 66 crore for the re-carpeting and construction of the new 655 m of the runway expansion.
