Odisha government glare on illegal abattoirs near airport after bird hit scares

Bhubaneswar:  In an attempt to check bird hits at Biju Patnaik International Airport, the state government has asked the commissionerate police to register cases against those running illegal slaughter houses and dumping rubbish near the airport.
In April, the director general of civil aviation (DGCA) had sent a letter to the general administration department, expressing displeasure over the lack of enforcement of Rule 91 of the Aircraft Rules, 1937, which says no slaughtering should be allowed within a 10-kilometre radius of an aerodrome to avoid attracting birds as they pose a risk to approaching aircraft.
Under the rule, violators can get a maximum of three years of imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakh. The DGCA, in the letter, also mentioned that the police should register cases on the basis of complaints filed by the local civic body.
