Airports Authority of India, GMR in race to bag Bhogapuram airport project

Vijayawada: GMR Group and the Airports Authority of India (AAI) are in a race to bag the contract for the international greenfield airport at Bhogapuram in Vizianagaram district.
Though GVK and Essel Group attended the pre-bid meeting, only AAI and GMR Group submitted their technical and financial bids. GVK Group handed over a 'regret letter' to the government stating its inability to take part in the bidding.
The financial bids are likely to be opened on Monday and based on it, the empowered group of secretaries will recommend to the state cabinet to award the project to the highest bidder. Earlier, there were reports that no investor was keen on backing Bhogapuram airport owing to poor returns.
he airport will cater to the needs of three north Andhra and two Godavari districts. The government has set up the Bhogapuram International Airport Corporation Ltd to implement the project.
Representatives of India's top airport developers, GMR and GVK groups, AAI and a new entrant into airports sector, Essel Infraprojects, had participated in the pre-bid meeting in June.
"GVK Group had given us a regret letter expressing its inability to participate in the bidding. We have received two technical and financial bids from GMR and AAI. Their bids are technically responsive and the financial bids are likely to be opened on August 21, after which due procedures will be followed," principal secretary to the state government for energy, infrastructure, and investments, Ajay Jain told TOI.
