Who is Rajiv Bansal; the man who replaced Ashwani Lohani as Air India Chairman and Managing Director

New Delhi: The Central Government on Wednesday appointed senior IAS officer Rajiv Bansal as the interim-Chairman and Managing Director of Air India for a tenure of three months. Bansal, who will replace Ashwani Lohani, currently serves as additional secretary and financial adviser in the petroleum ministry.  As per Press Trust of India, Bansal is from the Nagaland cadre of 1988 batch and hails from Haryana. He brings with him an extensive career-experience of 30 years. Previously, Bansal has also served at the civil aviation ministry between 2006 and 2008. reports that Bansal has also served in Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) where he was looking after Digital Payments, IT Act, Aadhaar and Internet Governance. The senior official has also working as Government Nominee Director at Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited since August 10, 2017.
As per his profile on the website, Bansal has worked as Secretary, Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) and also as Joint Secretary, Department of Heavy Industries, Government of India and Director, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India. Bansal also has the experience of working as part time official Director at Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited from July 14, 2009, to March 15, 2011. He has even served as Director of HMT Limited from August 03, 2009 to January 11, 2010. He has also worked with the Board NACIL, Alliance Air and GITA.
Bansal’s appointment comes at a time when the government is working on the modalities for the disinvestment of the loss-making national carrier. The senior official has also worked in state departments. Bansal is a  Civil Engineer by profession and holds a bachelor degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. He also holds a Diploma in Finance from ICFAI, Hyderabad and an Executive Masters in International Business from IIFT, New Delhi.
