3 kg gold seized from passenger at Pune airport

Pune: In the second such incident in less than a month, customs authorities seized over 3 kg gold exceeding Rs. 1 crore in value from a passenger at the Pune International Airport on Monday.

The suspect, who flew in from Dubai on an Air India Express flight (IX 212), was thoroughly searched and the haul retrieved from his person. His accomplice, who had come to collect the bullion stash, was also intercepted, said customs officials.

Both were arrested and produced before a local court later in the day.

Officials revealed that the total recovery of gold weighing 3159.55 gm comprised of three rhodium-plated gold wires concealed in the inner lining of the suspect’s trolley bag which also contained seven gold biscuits and 59 gold plates hidden respectively in an emergency LED light and digital amplifier inside the suspect’s bag.

“The passenger and his accomplice were arrested and the raw gold confiscated under the Customs Act, 1962 under the reasonable belief that it was an attempt to smuggle the metal into the country. They were later produced at a local court. Further investigations are on,” according to Maneesh Dudpuri, Assistant Commissioner, Pune International Airport.
