Renovated airport inauguration in Belagavi on Sept. 14

Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapati Raju will inaugurate the renovated airport in Sambra near here on September 14.

The vital upgrade has been on the runway. Its length has been increased to 2,300 metres from 1,830 metres. This will enable larger aircraft carrying more passengers to touchdown in Belagavi. Officials hope the airport would be able to receive cargo flights in the near future.

The upgradation project includes other completed works like the new apron, air traffic control, technical blocks, taxiway, isolation bay and the instrumental landing system that allows planes to take off and touch down at night and low light. Other works like installing a localiser and setting up a glide-path are in progress and are expected to be ready in a year.

The airport is equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment. Enough safety systems and processes are put in place, said Rajesh Kumar Maurya, airport director.
