AAI official held in smuggling case

Kolkata: Girish Sharma, an AAI official who was earlier posted as the joint general manager (cargo) at NSCBI airport, was arrested by the special investigation branch of Kolkata Airport Customs Commissionerate.
He was taken into custody in connection with a probe in which a smuggling racket was unearthed last week. This is the second arrest of an AAI employee allegedly involved in the racket.
According to sources, Sharma was posted as the joint general manager (cargo) at Kolkata airport for around two-and-a-half years. He was heading the team responsible for cargo operations. It was during his tenure that a racket allegedly involving a few AAI employees started operating. Their job was to look for unguarded zones on the airport premises and make safe passage for the smuggled goods.
During investigation, the SIB of customs found out that the racket has been active for more than a year. The role of other staff, including ground handling agencies, in the racket is also being probed.
Earlier last week, SIB customs arrested Sampad Narayan Mukherjee (40), another employee of AAI. Mukherjee, who was a data entry operator at the airport, was allegedly one of the masterminds of the operation.
